A salmon that is a bit fishy oval#1016

orange pink slides into salmon oval This clean bright oval weighs 2.81 carats. Its color slides from pink to orange depending on the light. Nice size for a ring stone.

I always smile when I am obviously looking at a gemstone under different conditions than when I put the gemstone’s official color on the back of the boxes they live in.  Today under a yellowish light on a gray day, I was trying to decide if this eye clean oval had a touch of orange in it (to make it salmon rather than another pink) when I look at the back of the box and read orange. So this is another slider that works me over in the orange to pink color range and can be at all tone levels I think.  I hope to understand this better in the future.

This bright oval is eye clean with a medium tone level.  It shows not indications of dichroism so there are no darker ends on this oval.  A nice moderate gemstone.  It weighs 2.81 carats and would make a nice ring stone keep your color world interesting.

About Bruce Fry

I was born in Summit, NJ in 1947 and graduated from Summit High School in 1966. I graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in 1970 and after spending another year in graduate school, I left to see the world of Brazil. After spending some more time discovering myself, I ended up working for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for 32 years as an Air Quality Engineer in the Department of Environmental Protection. I retired in 2007 and took up faceting gemstones again after a long hiatus that reached back to my twenties. I had started cutting cabochons when I was 13 and bought my first faceting machine when I was 15, but ran out of money and time until I retired. My great love in gemology is tourmaline and the collection presented here represents my effort to get as much beauty and variety in the colors of tourmaline as I can. I was particularly lucky in being able to get unheated cuprian tourmaline before copper was discovered in gem grade tourmaline from Mozambique.
